CHILD LABOUR - A MAJOR ISSUE

Child labour is one of the challenging problems in India. The practice of engaging young children in various sectors of labour is evident. It is astonishing to note that there is staggering figure between 60 and115 million working children in India perhaps the highest number in the world (Human Rights Watch, 1996). It is poverty that draws a child to earn money to support the needs of his family. Though it is prevalent in most parts of the country, the problem is acute in socio-economical weaker states like UP, Bihar, Orissa, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh and north-eastern states. Besides poverty, lack of education and accessible sources of credit forces poor parents to engage their children in child labour. India is forced to take up the challenge of providing basic amenities to these children.

It is seen that more than 85% of child labour is in the country’s rural areas, working in agricultural activities, such as farming, livestock rearing, forestry and fisheries. Children also develop skills in certain traditional crafts. These children contribute greatly to the national income.

The Government of India is keen to eradicate child labour. India’s unequivocal commitment to the cause of children is well expressed in constitutional provisions, legislations, policies and programmes. The Directive Principle of State Policy and the Fundamental Rights reveal the commitment of the government. Besides, India is also party to the UN Declaration on the Rights of the child, 1959. India adopted the national policy on children in 1974. India also ratified on December 2, 1992, the Convention on the Rights of Child of 1990. This ratification implies that India will ensure wide awareness about issues relating to children. India is also a signatory to the World Declaration on the survival, Protection and Development of children.

Child labour is a great socio-economic problem. Children essentially work to maintain the economic level of the households, either in the form of work for wages, or help in household enterprises, or in household chores. In all the activities the basic objective is to provide the family financial support. In some cases, it has been found that a child’s income accounted for between 34 and 37 percent of the total income of the household.

Poverty has a close connection with child labour. The population of poor people in India is comparatively high. As per the latest report of the Planning Commission, about 22% of the people live below the poverty line. It is of child labour which supports the essential requirements for the survival of the family. The combination of poverty and lack of social security network form the basis of even harsher type child labour-bonded child labour. The bonded children are forced to work hard to pay back sums of money previously borrowed from shrewd money lenders.

Literacy is one of the major determinants of child labour. Lack of education of a major section of the society makes them fall a prey to child labour. Free and compulsory education result in the increase of literacy rate. The policy of providing education for the masses immensely helps a corresponding decline in child labour.

The strong educational base of Kerala distinguishes it from other Indian states. The government of Kerala allocates more funds to education than any other state with a per capita expenditure of 11.5 rupees compared to the Indian average of 7.8 rupees. Moreover, Kerala spends more money on mass education which has led to a dropout ratio of close to zero percent. Here, child work participation ratio is almost zero compared to the Indian average of 7.1%. It is important to note that Kerala Government has made no special effort to curb child labour. It is the expansion of education that has succeeded.

An effective check on the spread of child labour, presupposes an improvement in the state of education. High illiteracy and dropout rates are reflective of the inadequacy of the educational system. Poverty plays a crucial role in the ineffectiveness of the educational system.

The complex issue of child labour is an issue of growing concern. Compulsory education and forceful enforcement of child labour laws alone cannot solve the crisis. The government of India must ensure that the needs of the poor are taken care of to efface child labour. Child labour poses a serious threat to the development of India. It is necessary to understand the ferocity of the problem in its true perspectives. The primary cause of child labour viz. poverty has to be wiped out fully.

The policies and programs of the government conform to its commitment which focuses on the eradication of child labour. Though enforcement is in existence, it has failed to be much effort. Measures have to be initiated in the proper manner by the government inorder to achieve the goal of eradication of child labour.

BHAGAT SINGH

Bhagat Singh, the name itself is legendary. The courageous sardar who attained martyrdom for our country’s freedom.

Bhagat Singh was born on 27th September 1907 in the Banga village of Layapur district in Punjab, which now is in Pakistan. Though they were farmers, his family was of patriots known for their revolutionary activities.

Since his school and college days, a hatred against the British rule built up inside him. He became a member of Noujawan Bharat Sabha, where he met Chandrasekhar Azad, Batukeshwar Dutt and others. He worked with them to spread the awareness of freedom struggle.

When Lala Lajpatrai led a silent protest march against the Simon commission, he was brutally beaten up by the British police officer Scott. This resulted in his death. Bhagat Singh, who witnessed this, decided to avenge this death by killing Scott. But by mistaken identity, he killed Sanders, a junior officer. Then he fled to escape death sentence.

When the British were going to pass an ordinance to suppress the freedom struggle, Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt were chosen to throw bombs in the assembly, but without causing injury to anyone. They courted arrest after throwing the bombs.
At that time Bhagat Singh’s friend turned a government approver and identified him as the killer of Sanders. Bhagat Singh did not disown the crime and fiery courtroom speech, gave reasons for killing.

When sentenced to death, he wished to be shot like soldier, but his plea was rejected. The brave hero was hanged on 23rd march 1931

ASHOKA THE GREAT

One of the world’s greatest rulers was Samrat Ashoka. He was the grandson of the first ruler of the Maurya dynasty, Chandragupta Maurya. Information about Emperor Ashoka is obtained from the stone inscriptions, carved pillars and edicts found all over the country.

Since  young age, Ashoka was courageous, dignified adventurous and good administrator. So he was sent to take charge of Avanti. There he married Shakya kumara, a daughter of a merchant. They had two children, Mahindra and Sanghmitra. Later, in 268 B.C. he was crowned the king by the demand of the court ministers and subjects.

Emperor Ashoka ruled over a vast empire, which stretched from Kashmir and Nepal to Mysore and from Afghanistan to Saurashtra. But only the Patriotic people of Kalinga (Orissa) refused to accept his sovereignty. So Ashoka attacked Kalinga with his vast army. The fierce battle resulted in lot of bloodshed.

Ashoka was full of remorse after witnessing this devastation caused by his attack. So he took oath that he would never take up arms again. The Kalinga was proved to be his first and last war.

Gautam Buddha’s teachings of non-violence, kindness and love for mankind, opened a new path of life for Ashoka. He accepted Buddhism and sent his representatives all around the country and outside the country, to spread the message of Buddha.

For the welfare of his subjects, he undertook many useful projects like building hospitals for people as well as animals, wells and water reservoirs for the travelers, planting trees along the roadsides etc. Ashoka gave importance to education, agriculture and trade.

Emperor Ashoka built many Stoopas and Viharas. Carved figures of four lions on the Ashoka pillar is now official emblem of the government of India. Ashoka Chakra has the place of honour on the National Flag of India.

AKBAR THE GREAT

Akbar….the real founder of Mugal Empire in India. His father Humayun did rule over Delhi and Agra, but his reign wasn’t very strong. It was only during Akbar’s rule, the Mugal Empire extended from Afghanistan and Godavari river in the south and from Himalayas to Bengal in the east.

This descendent of Chenghis Khan and Taimur Lang, was born on 15 October 1542 at Amarkot in Sindh.  Akbar’s father died when he was barely 13 years old. So Akbar’s guardian Bairam Khan looked after the empire in Akbar’s name. But in 1560 Akbar took the reins in his hands.

Then Akbar married Rajput Princess Jodhabai in 1561. She was the daughter of Raja Biharimal of Amber in Rajasthan and they got married at Sambhar. Raja Biharimal’s  grandson Man Singh was Akbar’s chief general of army.

Akbar was tolerant towards all other religions. He cancelled the pilgrimage tax on Hindus and remitted the Jiziya, a toll tax on non-Muslims. This endeared him to all his subjects. From 1561 to 1601 he carried on many military campaigns and expanded his empire with the help of the Rajputs.

Akbar was a shrewd statesman and a very able administrator. He brought about many social and economical reforms. Though he was illiterate, he encouraged art, literature and crafts. He began his own new creed, Din-e-ilahi; by taking all good points from different religions like Hindu, Islam, Christian and Zorastrian. He was liberal in religious views and his court boasted of many Hindus like Raja Man Singh, Raja Todarmal, Birbal and Tansen, on important posts.

Akbar built many magnificent buildings like the Red Fort of Agra in 1565 and the entire city of Fatehpur Sikri from 1571 to 1578.
Following a brief illness, Akbar died on 17 October 1605. He was buried at Sikandara near Agra. This famous tomb, Akbar Ka Makbara is still visited by many tourists every day.

NIRBHAYA

December 16 is not a kind of date which any Indian would feel proud to remember. It would have been an ordinary date if those bastards had not beaten the life out of an innocent 23 year old girl. Yes.. Exactly 2 years ago, a 23 year old girl named Jyoti Singh Pandey was brutally gang raped in front of his friend who too was severely beaten, on a private bus at 9.30 PM. The incident has ignited protests all around the country and people and govt. started concerning the security of our girls a little more seriously. The incident will be a black mark our history for ever.

The accused were 6 which included a minor. All were arrested and charged for kidnapping and sexual assault. One of them hanged himself to death while the other 4 except the minor was sentenced to death. The minor too was given the  maximum possible punishment of 3 years imprisonment in a reform facility. But the irony is, its said that the minor was the most savage among them.

Well my doubt is that.. If he was matured enough to commit such a brutal crime.. Isnt he grown enough to accept a more sever punishment?? Well... a 3 year imprisonment does not do good to an animal (Am i insulting them??) who has done something really ferocious.

The incident happened on the night of 16th December,2012 when two friends boarded a bus in Munirika, South Delhi. The bus had 5 passengers and a driver namely Ram Singh, Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta, Akshay Takur while the sixth one(the minor) is unknown. The five except the driver taunted them, asking what they were doing at such a late hour. The male friend tried to protest but was beaten gagged and made unconscious by beating him with an iron rod. The girl was then dragged to the back side of the bus and was gang raped by the five while the driver continue driving. Meedical reports say that the girl was severely beaten and a blunt object was inserted in to her vaginal track. An accused later admit that he has seen another assailant in the bus pulling out some rope-like stuff (suspected to be the girls intestine) out of her body(fuck!! I cant believe rascals like this even exist!!)

Both the victims were thrown out of the bus whom were later taken to the hospital by local police. The girl was immediately moved to emergency ventilator. But she couldnt survive from the ferocious injuries gifted by the accused and she died on 28th of the same month.

All of the accused was given appropriate punishments(personally, I dont agree with the juvenile stuff). Protests were held at different parts of the country against the accused.

But,to our disappointment, Nothing has changed. More and more rape victims were born. Our sisters are not safe.

I call a country developed if it's female citizens can walk through a street with out fear even during late nights...

Save our sisters.. Its our duty as their brothers..

Take care..

DECEMBER 6- PERSON OF THE DAY- Dr. B.R AMBEDKAR

So far we have chosen the person of the day from celebrities having birthdays on the particular day.. But.. Today.. While I was searching for them.. I found that a more important person (to us,indians) had died today.. So,we thought of sharing it with you..

Dr.B.RAmbedkar aka "Babasaheb" was the principle architect of Indian constitution. He was born on !4th April,1891. He was a prolific student and had completed degrees from various universities like Columbia University and London School of economics. He was one of the finest jurist, economist, and social reformer India has ever scene. He worked hard for the upliftment of Dalits (untouchables). Dalits, during his era suffered very much. They were suppressed by the so called higher class. Ambedkar published journals advocating the rights social freedom for dalits.

"If you ask me, my ideal would be the society based on liberty, equality and fraternity An ideal society should be mobile and full of channels of conveying a change taking in one part ti other parts."

Yeah, He actually did dream for an India with equality, liberty and fraternity... God knows whether it has come true or not..

Anyway, his effort for the well being of the lower caste has shown some effect.. Backward caste people are given more priority in every field and are exempted from many liabilities..

Being an educated lawyer, jurist, and economist.. Dr. B.R Ambedkar played the most important role in the construction of the Indian Constitution..

The very pure intention of this man is really appreciable. Despite the fact that the reservation system for backward classes has become pointless now, it was indeed neede at that time to lift the dalits from the pit they were put by the upper class men.. What he had done was the right thing then..

I have just told what i felt like speaking out today.. To know more about him,.
check this link: http://www.ambedkar.org/

Take care...
good night..

BABRI MASJID - A SCANDAL TO THE INDIAN SECULARISM!!

"FAITH IS A PRODUCTION OF MIND. WE SHOULD NEVER CLAIM THAT ONLY OUR RELIGION IS TRUE AND OTHERS FALSE. THERE IS TRUTH IN EVERY RELIGION. ALL OF THEM HAVE ESTABLISHED WITH GOOD INTENTIONS."
                                                -SREE NARAYANA GURU

Babari Masjid incident is and will always be a black mark on our history(I am an Indian)..

For guys who are not familiar with the incident,

Babari Masjid was a Mosque which was built in 1527 by the orders of first Mughal king Babur. The mosque was situated at Ayodhya. In 1992 a large crowd of almost 0.15 m Hindu Volunteers rallied towards it claiming that there was a Ram temple at the place and Masjid was built after destroying it.

Ayodhya believed to be the birth place of Lord Ram(7th incarnation of Lord Vishnu), could actually had a temple for him(who knows)!!

The place were used by both Hindus and Muslims. Later, after the first signs of violence in 1859, British colonial govt. allotted special places for both. Everything was under control until 1949. Again peace was broken and the gates of the Masjid were closed for good. After that several attempts were made by the Hindu volunteers to attack the mosque.

On 6th December of 1992, exactly 22 years ago Hindu volunteers (i do not dare say the troops, everybody knows it) organised a rally of almost 0.15 million Hindu kar sevaks (volunteers) at the place of mosque. The rally include speeches by leaders. The crowd was more or less at peace at the first and their was police troops around the mosque. But a man somehow managed to sneak in to the mosque and brandished a saffron flag. This was taken as a sign by the protesters outside. They charged in to the mosque with axes and hammers in their hands. The outnumbered police could do nothing but stare while the kar sevaks leveled the whole Masjid in few hours. Several other mosques too were demolished on that day.

Whatever.. The incident has accelerated the clan war between the Hindus and Muslims which was already prevailing India since British rule and it spread like a virus all over India. Its effects were catastrophic. The immediate incidents after the act itself killed over 2000 men.

Even after 2 decades.. People have not forgotten the day.. Communal riots still take place every now and then.. Quite a number of children are injected with Religious Insanity.. Every child is taught not only to love his religion but also to hate and destroy other's..

"SO SAD THAT PEOPLE BASICALLY KILL EACH OTHER TO SEE WHO HAS GOT THE BETTER IMAGINARY FRIEND"

So far.. Human beings have got nothing from religions but have lost friends, family, and life for it.. Its high time we realize that religion can no longer unite people (as if, it has ever).. Throw away and be a human...

I DO NOT ASK YOU TO BE AN ATHEIST.. WHAT I REQUEST IS TO HAVE MUTUAL RESPECT.
